Patna residents have been waiting for years to finally see metro trains running through their city, and this wait has ended with the opening of the first phase of Patna Metro. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched the 3.6 km elevated stretch on October 6, and the Metro was officially opened to the public the next day on October 7.

But the excitement surrounding the big move for Bihar’s capital soon met with an unexpected shock. A few days after the grand launch, a video recorded at one of the new metro stations began circulating online, much to the disappointment of many. The clip showed red gutka stains not only on stairs and walls but also on platform areas and even tracks.

‘Gutka gang’ arrives in Patna Metro

In the video, a man can be heard expressing his frustration, saying, “It has not even been 2-3 days since Patna Metro started operating and you can see here that the Gutka gang has arrived and here is the metro station and the platform.” He’s making fun of someone. What a shame you people of Bihar have done. Bihar government is doing such a good job, they are building the metro and you are increasing its usage (it has not even been 2-3 days) since the start of Patna metro and you can already see the arrival of the ‘Gutka gang’ who have turned the metro stations and platforms into red blotches. Take some shame, people of Bihar. “The government is doing a good job by building this metro, and you are making it dirty.”

Social media calls for strict action against the “Gutka gang”

The video received a lot of attention online, gathering hundreds of comments. Many people expressed their disappointment and shared ideas for dealing with the issue.

“The government should make such people clean those gutkas. We will keep complaining to the government about infrastructure, but when the government builds and delivers it, we will go and spit on this very thing,” one user commented.

Another said: “I don’t understand why the government is imposing a ban on all paan masala/gutkha manufacturing companies.”

“Cameras should spot people who litter and make them clean up. People won’t learn until they feel ashamed. If you throw even one piece of litter, you should clean the streets for one hour,” one viewer suggested.

“The entire country is disturbed by the gutkha gang. There is a need to impose a complete ban on gutkha,” another person wrote.

“I don’t know what obsession I had, but I had this feeling like it was coming. And now it’s here. Once again, we find ourselves on the same page when it comes to civic sense,” read another comment.

One of them also said: “Face people spitting gutka and keep Pattana Metro safe.”

More about Patna Metro

The first phase currently includes three important stations: ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhotnath Road. Once completed, the Blue Line (North-South Corridor) will stretch 16.2 km long and connect Patna Junction with ISBT which will have five elevated stations and seven underground stations.

The 12 planned stations are Patna Junction, Akashvani, Gandhi Maidan, PMCH, Patna University, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Rajendra Nagar, Bakri Amusement Park, Khimni Chak, Bhootnath, Zero Mile and New ISBT.
