In Thailand, a wealthy businessman recently caused a nationwide uproar with a shocking announcement. While millionaire businessmen usually make headlines for their wealth, luxury cars or extravagant lifestyles, 65-year-old Arnon Rodthong has found himself in the spotlight for a much more unusual reason.
He publicly announced on social media that anyone who slaps his son’s girlfriend at least 10 times will be rewarded with thousands of baht.
Slap and make money
Arnon Rodthong, the owner of the largest durian orchard and warehouse in Chumphon Province, posted an offer on Facebook, offering a reward to anyone who slaps his son’s girlfriend. “Anyone in Lang Suan area who slaps my son’s girlfriend at least 10 times will get 30,000 baht (about 81,000 rupees) from me. Come to me for the money once the deed is done,” he said.
He added that if any legal fines are imposed, he will cover those costs as well. The reward will remain in effect until his son Zhai ends his relationship with the woman.
Rodthong claimed that the post was aimed at getting justice for his daughter-in-law and guiding his son to the “right path”.
Allegations of threatening his wife
According to South China Morning PostRodthong’s son, Chai, left his wife and child to live with a woman named On. Oddly enough, On was previously involved with a younger family member, either a grandson or nephew. She initially worked as an accountant in the family’s durian company before becoming close to her younger relative and then beginning a relationship with Chai.
Reports indicate that Chai distanced himself from his wife and threatened her with a firearm to leave their home.
Rodthong is ready to face the legal consequences
Under Thai law, slapping or hitting someone constitutes simple assault, punishable by up to two years in prison, a 40,000 baht fine, or both. Rodthong stated that if his post violates any laws, he is willing to face legal action, as he believes he is defending his family’s honor and the rights of his daughter-in-law.
Proof of reward in cash
In a media interview, Rodthong showed 1 million baht (about Rs 27 lakh) in cash on camera to prove that his reward offer was real. However, this announcement quickly sparked controversy.
As the backlash intensified, Rodthong deleted his Facebook post. He explained that respected friends and acquaintances advised him that promoting violence is not the solution and can set a bad example for society. He said: “Many urged me not to encourage violence, so I withdrew the reward and deleted the post.”
He subsequently announced that he had severed all ties with his son Zhai and transferred all property previously owned in Zhai’s name to his granddaughter.
