The station house officer (SHO) of Barsoi police station, Ram Chandra Mandal, has been suspended after a CCTV video showing him arguing with a brother and sister at a local restaurant went viral. The decision to suspend came after an official investigation into the incident.
Katihar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shekhar Chaudhary confirmed the arrest and ordered further investigation. The suspension order, dated October 28, was shared via a press release on the official account of Katihar Police.
The incident took place on October 24 at BR-11 restaurant in Barsoi, Katihar district. According to officials, Mandal arrived at the restaurant as part of a routine election check after receiving information about possible presence of anti-social elements, as the state gears up for the Lok Sabha elections next month.

Widespread CCTV footage, lasting more than four minutes, shows Mandal entering the restaurant with an officer and three policewomen. He approaches a man and a woman sitting together and forcefully asks the man about the woman’s presence.
Although the man calmly explained that she was his sister, the private security officer raised his voice and repeatedly asked him to “watch his tone and nerves.” The confrontation escalated, with other diners looking visibly uncomfortable, until a bystander intervened to defuse the situation.
“The in-charge of Barsai Police Station was seen arguing with some individuals sitting at the BR-11 Restaurant located at Barsai Ras Chowk. The investigation into the matter was conducted by Deputy Inspector of Police (Headquarters), Katihar,” Katihar Police said in a statement.
A widely circulated video clip was received from CCTV, where on 24.10.2025, Head of Police Station Barsoi was fighting with some people sitting at BR-11 Restaurant located at Barsoi Ras Chowk. She added: “During the investigation, it became clear that the official of the Barsoi Police Station was using abusive language with the individuals sitting in the restaurant. This reflects their negligence in performing their duty and their abusive behavior, and it also tarnishes the image of the police.”
The police confirmed that the matter is being investigated comprehensively, and additional measures will be followed based on the results of the investigation.
