An incident, reportedly involving workers of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has attracted a lot of attention online. A video that has now gone viral shows MNS workers assaulting a Hindi-speaking man. The incident reportedly took place in Vashi area of Navi Mumbai.

It all started after a Marathi woman accused the man of “misbehaving” with her at the workplace. He was then summoned to the PNM office by a local leader, where he was repeatedly slapped.

According to a report by India TV, MNS workers claimed that the man, identified as Ramesh Shukla, abused the woman and behaved inappropriately during the quarrel.

A video of the incident appeared online, in which two men wearing yellow shirts were seen slapping him repeatedly.

MNS workers demanded an apology from the man

During the confrontation, the woman was also present. She was also seen slapping him. They also forced him to apologize and sign a written apology letter.

The clip showed members of the movement surrounding Shukla and demanding an apology for his actions. Balasaheb Shinde said the party will not tolerate any disrespect or harassment towards women, especially Maharashtrian women.

As quoted by the aforementioned agency, he said: “Anyone who misbehaves with a Marathi woman will face the same treatment. We will protect our women and preserve their dignity.”

The Internet criticizes MNS workers for their behavior

The video caught the attention of people online, leading to calls to address such behaviour.

One user said: “Because of these petty people, the country is going down the wrong path. Now the citizens of the country are being beaten by their own people in their own country – people who have not harmed anyone, who have no enmity. Let the people speak in any language they know; what does anyone lose from that? With such a policy, you are hurting yourself.”

Another asked: “What did Maharashtra do in the process of creating Singapore?”

Another person asked: “What message are they trying to get across by calling someone into the office via live camera and beating them up? Who gave them the right to beat people up? So what use are the police at all if decisions are going to be made that way anyway?”

“Sad behaviour. These politicians have divided the country as much as possible, if religion issue is different, if religion itself is different caste issue, if religion and caste are same language issue, if religion, language and caste are same region… a never ending list,” a different person shared.

MNS Sahakar Sena issued a statement

Following this incident, the MNS Sahakar Sena issued a statement, warning that such misbehavior will not be tolerated, India TV reported.

“This is Maharashtra. Those who live and work here must respect Marathi women and local culture. Misbehavior in the name of work or money will face serious consequences,” they said.
