A major flyover near Hyderpur on Delhi’s Outer Ring Road has become a subject of concern after a major crack was discovered on its surface. The structure is part of the famous Mukarba Chowk grade separator and has been in use since March 2009. It was built by the PWD of Delhi at a cost of around Rs 195 crore to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate travel between GT Karnal Road and the Outer Ring Road.
Every day, thousands of vehicles rely on this road, especially during peak hours. The bridge has been carrying a heavy load for many years, and was recently added to a government project to improve the quality and beautification of the roads. But the recent damage has worried commuters who travel through this stretch regularly. People are now wondering why such an important bridge did not undergo inspections and repairs on time.

In the video shared online, the crack covered more than half the road, leaving little room for movement. The vehicles appear to move slowly in one line, crossing the damaged section one after the other. The drone view also shows a long line of cars, buses and trucks stuck on the bridge, waiting for their turn to pass safely. The traffic jam is often delayed and drivers appear confused and anxious as they try to move forward without getting too close to the broken section.

Another shared, “Near Alipur on NH 44, a pothole appeared on the bridge four months ago, and the bridge is still closed. This is the condition of India’s capital and one of the busiest roads, GT Road. So you can imagine what the rest of the country must be like. Mark my words, if it gets fixed in less than another month or two… (implying disbelief that it will be fixed soon).”

According to a Times of India report, the PWD Minister said that a private company studied 896 large and small crossings in Delhi last year to understand traffic problems. This company has also worked with the National Highways Authority of India, so it has experience in this field. Among the top locations on their list are the ITO crossing, Mukarba Chowk, Metcalfe House Junction, Kingsway Camp area and another major stretch on the Ring Road. The goal is to make movement smoother and prevent regular traffic chaos.
