Environmental activist Bharati Chaturvedi, founder of non-profit organization Chintan, on Wednesday revealed a scary incident involving an Uber ride in Delhi, saying the city’s women’s helpline did not respond when she sought help.

In a post on X, Chaturvedi claimed that when she tried to stop the driver by opening the cab door, he allegedly grabbed her arm and twisted it. She added that she called the women’s helpline number 100, but did not receive any response.

“Dear women of Delhi, I took @Uber_India from Vasant Vihar to Sarvodaya area to the doctor. The pin stopped near Essex Farms. The driver agreed to leave me without the pin. But he started getting angry and shouting and turned suddenly while I asked him to go straight to turn. I asked him to stop and he refused,” she detailed in her post.

She added: “I opened the cab door to make him stop. He turned around, grabbed my arm and twisted it. He called 100, but there was no answer.”

Chaturvedi also contacted Uber’s safety team, who asked her to contact the police. She expressed frustration at the lack of immediate assistance and wondered how the women could reach the authorities in emergency situations, noting that the driver did not take payment for the trip.

“Called uber safety and was asked to call 100. Sanjana also said she would involve the entire team to evaluate the action. Outrageous. @DelhiPolice How do women call you when in need? PS: Driver did not take payment.”

The activist also tagged Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Uber’s support team in her post.

In response, Uber said: “Hey, this is very concerning. Such behavior can never be tolerated, and your safety will always remain a priority. Please share your specific ride along with the date and time of the ride and the registered contact details associated with your Uber account via direct messages. Our safety team will reach out to you shortly.”

The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread reactions. Social media users expressed anger over the lack of response from Delhi Police and criticized Uber’s safety protocols.

One user commented, saying: “Oh my God! Terrifying. Are you okay?” Another suggested she “should have hit the driver in the face with the other hand.”

One wrote: “This is so terrible that if Delhi wasn’t already unsafe it makes one shudder. Delhi Police have literally disappeared from the streets. Giant hugs to me, you can imagine how badly shaken I am.”

Another user wrote: “Beyond shocking!!! There should be a panic button that cuts the car’s engine within everyone’s reach. I hope you took pictures of the car and driver. Make this public so others are warned.”
