A post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a Bengaluru-based user has gone viral after he narrated an emotional conversation with a Rapido taxi driver whose life was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The post, written by a user named Chirag, described what started as a routine trip but slowly evolved into a story of financial collapse and resilience.
“Life is so unfair, man,” Chirag wrote, recalling how the driver struck up a casual conversation about where he lives and which college he attends — the kind of small talk common during short trips.
According to the post, the conversation quickly turned personal. The driver said he studied hotel management in Amity and once lived a comfortable life. His father served in the military, the family ran a successful business and stability was a given.
“Life was good back then,” the driver said.
That changed after the outbreak of the pandemic. The driver told Chirag that his family lost nearly Rs 13-14 crore during the coronavirus outbreak, forcing them to shut down their entire business. His attempt to start over with a new business also failed, costing him another Rs 4 lakh and leaving him without any savings.
With little money to fall back on, the driver turned to bike taxi work.
“All I have is this bike,” he said, explaining how he came to work as a Rapido rider. But what caught Chirag’s attention most was the man’s determination despite the setbacks.
The driver said, crying mid-ride: “I’m not giving up. I still believe in God. I’ll try one last time. One more shot before I give up.”
“I didn’t know what to say. I sat there quietly,” Chirag wrote, adding that the conversation left him shaken.
“Life has struck me as really unfair sometimes,” he concluded the post.
The post has since attracted widespread attention online with many users sharing similar experiences, saying the coronavirus has devastated families financially and pushed people into invisible struggles far removed from their previous lives.
