Sleep divorce: Sleep divorce has become a trend online these days, and according to reports, more and more young couples are adopting it. It just means that couples decide to sleep in separate rooms instead of sharing the same bed. According to a 2024 National Post report, millennials are now more embracing sleep divorce and see it as a way they can make their relationship stronger. In support of this change, the Hilton 2025 Trends Report also stated that even on holidays, many couples prefer to have separate beds for better sleep.

In a recent post on Reddit on the same topic, a user shared that his relationship with his wife became much better after sleeping in a separate room.

The “Sleep Divorce” post went viral on Reddit

The Reddit post started with a question, where the user wanted to know how many people actually sleep in separate beds and if it’s as common as people think. He recounted that about five years ago, one night he could not sleep because his wife was keeping him awake. After that experience, they both realized that they get better sleep by sleeping separately.

He said that some of his sleeping habits did not please his wife. Since they started sleeping in separate rooms, no one bothers each other anymore when they have to wake up. He also said he snores, likes to stretch out during sleep, and likes to sleep with the door closed, while his wife keeps the door open because of the cats.

Now that they are sleeping in separate rooms, all these things are no longer a reason to fight and both of them can sleep as per their choice. Concluding her post, she wrote: “We both sleep better now, and because of this the mood remains good too and we feel more refreshed. This is very good.”

Reddit users agree

“Many users agreed with the positive aspects of Sleep Divorce.” One Redditor wrote: “I love this method!” As for me, I snore a lot, so my wife and I now sleep in separate rooms most nights and get very good sleep. Another wrote: “The same thing happens to me too. Good sleep becomes very important as you age. We both work together, so we spend a lot of time together, and having separate rooms is no problem.

One person commented: “My partner and I have separate but connected homes, and having our own personal space makes everything better.” People on the internet seem to agree with the concept of sleep divorce, and research also suggests the same.

According to the Sleep Research Society, about 30% of a person’s sleep quality is influenced by their partner’s sleep habits. So, if your partner’s sleeping habits are ruining yours, sleeping separately can make your sleep better.
