Chia seeds have gained popularity over the years because they provide many nutritional benefits. While it is widely viewed as providing numerous health benefits, one doctor has compared the nutritional content of the popular superfood to isabgol, also known as psyllium husk, and shared his views on its nutritional values.
In his Instagram video, the doctor said: “In a world obsessed with imported superfoods, we often ignore what actually works. If Isabgol gets good marketing like chia seeds in India, people won’t suffer from bloating and other bowel problems.”
Why is Isabgol a better choice?
The doctor added: “Isabgul is considered one of the most effective natural sources of soluble fiber. While chia seeds contain only 10% of soluble fiber, isabgul contains 70-80% of pure soluble fiber.” He stated that isabgol, like chia seeds, produces a fibrous gel within the intestines that controls digestion, stimulates bowel movements, and naturally soothes the intestinal lining.
Psyllium is a powerful prebiotic that works to boost the bifidobacteria in your stomach. “Studies show that psyllium husk keeps you full longer, supports digestion, reduces cholesterol, and improves blood sugar by slowing glucose absorption,” he added. The doctor recommended one or two tablespoons of water or yogurt and assured you that it would properly meet your hydration needs.
What is the online community saying?
Internet users had mixed reactions to the information. “Finally someone is talking about this,” one person said. But there were others who noticed certain problems with Isabgul. One user wrote: “I agree with the point you made, but taking isabgol every day is not ideal. If someone has loose stools or bloating, it can actually cause problems. It’s better to take it once a week or once every 10 days, not daily.”
On the other hand, chia seeds can be consumed every day because they are rich in fiber, omega-3, protein, calcium and antioxidants. Some people who were still confused between chia seeds and Isabgul asked, “Which one is better.” One person also mentioned, “Please focus on your diet and lifestyle more and go to a valid dietitian instead of listening to this half-knowledge.”
