A passenger traveling from Assam to Delhi on the Agartala Tejas Rajdhani Express on 2AC recently involved an alarming incident during his journey. He faced harassment from another passenger, who already had four confirmed top berths. The dispute began when the other passenger, who was traveling with his family, asked the man to move so his family could sit together. The man explained that he settled into his seat on his 24-hour flight with all his luggage and changing berths would cause him a lot of inconvenience.
Instead of understanding, the other passenger laughed at him and shouted at him for several minutes. He questioned his masculinity and demanded that he be human. The man decided not to escalate the situation and remained in his seat.
Pressuring the passenger to give up his seat
In a Reddit post titled, “The guy got angry and demanded humanity on my part just because I didn’t give up the upper side berth for another upper side,” he explained, “I boarded from Badarpur (Assam) station. I’ve been sitting on the same upper side berth for the last 24 hours. (Only regular side passengers would agree with me about the struggle it takes to adjust to your seat on a nearly two-day long flight.) So the guy, along with his family, boarded from Bhagalpur (Bihar), and got 3 “Top berths and one side top berth (which is only a cabin away, as are the four lower top berths and the top side berth).”
“So he suddenly asked me to reach the upper side berth for his son so that their family would stay together. I told him politely, ‘Main actually change karne mein comfortable nahi hun, yahan pe mere saare saamanpade hai aur yahin main Adjust chuka hun, dobara Change karunga toh saman leke phir wahi is having a problem karna badeja.'” He added, “(I’m actually not comfortable changing seats. All my belongings are here and have already settled.) If I change seats again, I will have to move all my stuff and have the same problem again.”
And the matter did not stop, according to the young man. “Suddenly, he tried to mock me by saying: ‘Tota hai tamhara husband?’” “Ladki nahi ho tum?” The moral police then continued to scream for two minutes saying “Humanity seeks Tom Mard Ho.” In the end, I didn’t go up anymore, and I didn’t give up my seat either. It was very clear that he was frustrated and tired but that doesn’t mean anyone should actually do it?
Users support the traveler
In response to the post, one user wrote: “These people will always be there, just smile and wave, if it seems to be going on longer than usual then call the train helpline, these people usually handle these things well.”
“He should have been humble and polite when asking someone for something, but instead he chose to be a selfish moron,” another shared.
“I mean, of course, you’re not obligated to give it to them, but I’ve also been on the other side, and it really helps if someone switches seats so my friends can be together. I’m generally grateful for them. But again, I’d never start making fun of someone because they said no, that’s just dumb behavior, it’s just sad,” one comment read.
One person said: “Just pay them Rs 5,000 for changing seats. Inconvenience fee.”
Another stated, “While he’s giving you the moral lecture, scratch your ears hard with your left pinkie and then put big headphones over them. If that doesn’t calm Uncle G down, nothing else will.”
Another praised him for keeping his calm and not turning the situation into a fight. They said that although they often agree to change seats when someone requests, they only do so after ensuring that the other person gets off at the same station and is willing to help with luggage. They added that giving up or keeping the seat depends on personal comfort and there is no one right choice for everyone.
