This comes days after videos emerged of Iranians around the world dancing to the tunes of the YMCA, imitating US President Donald Trump’s famous dance.
Khamenei’s death on February 28, 2026 at the age of 86 ended his 37-year rule as supreme leader, one of the longest periods of leadership in Iran’s history.
Videos on social media showed people cheering and honking car horns in the streets of Tehran as some Iranians cheered the news of Khamenei’s death.
People gathered in Vardis, where drivers honked their horns and fireworks were set off in celebration.
Similar scenes were reported in the town of Al-Basat, a suburb of Karaj, where residents took to the streets after the announcement.
Celebrations were also reported among Iranian communities abroad. Thousands gathered in central London, chanting and celebrating after news of Khamenei’s death.
Iranians were also seen celebrating in Frankfurt, while rallies took place in Toronto, where crowds described the moment as the end of an era.
Iranians and Jews in several locations joined the celebrations following the announcement.
In Los Angeles, Iranian women were seen dancing to Trump’s signature song, “YMCA,” and jumping for joy while praising and thanking the US president.
This joy is linked to the brutal crackdowns on protests, especially those sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, in which women burned hijabs and demanded an end to mandatory veiling and the enforcement of morality police. Khamenei’s iron grip on these measures made his end look like a door opening to breathable air.
