Eden Gardens in Kolkata remains one of the famous cricket stadiums in India. Over the years, it has hosted many historic matches and unforgettable moments in the sport. But apart from cricket, there is also a strange story associated with the stadium that many people may not know. One content creator recently spoke about an old and mysterious tale associated with the stadium from when matches used manual scoreboards.
As the story goes, a journalist once entered the stadium a day before India’s match against England and noticed that the player’s name and score were already written on the board. The next day, the same player came up with this exact score during the match. The same thing is said to have happened again with another batsman, leaving the journalist confused. An old worker claimed that the ghost of a British officer visits the stadium at night.
The journalist noticed a strange result on the manual scoreboard
According to the creator, “The stadium is actually very haunted, but very few people actually know about it. Long before electronic scorecards, there were manual scorecards. You know, we would have to manually put in the big black scorecards with the name of the batsman, the player, the score, the number of runs scored, etc. During that era, there was a match between England and India. The night before the match, there was a press conference and a journalist just walked around the ground. So there I saw it on the manual scorecard, there was the name of the Indian batsman, And he mentioned three runs, which basically means Tendulkar was out in 3 runs, so he said, maybe they were just testing the scorecard, and didn’t think much about it, Tendulkar said.
“The next day, when the match started, the Indian batsman got out with exactly the same score. So this journalist thought it might just be a coincidence, but in the next innings, he went back to the field. Before the match, he saw another batsman whose name was there, and he said it was 4 runs. And when the match actually started, the Indian batsman got out again, and he made 4 runs. So he was very puzzled. It can’t be a coincidence. So he started asking and they found out, and some old-timers said they had already seen this happen Often in the stadium for the India vs England match until a drunken pitchman told them that from the nearby Southern Cemetery, he saw the ghost of an old British general coming here changing the scorecard of the Indian batsmen because he didn’t want them to play against the British.
Social media users are reacting and sharing mixed reactions
In response to the post, one user jokingly asked: “What happened to the bogey in the 2016 T20 World Cup final between England and West Indies when Carlos Brathwaite hit 4 sixes in 4 balls to give WI the win?”
Another shared, “I feel the ghost. He would have made a lot of riches if he was born in this era, courtesy of Dream11.”
One comment read: “Perfect match-fixing plot.”
Another shared a similar story and said he lives in Kolkata. According to him, people say the scoreboard is haunted by the spirit of the former worker who died in the line of duty. He explained that some unusual things were observed at night, such as strange sounds and the numbers on the manual plate changing on their own without anyone touching them.
