Reddit users share the ‘burn it all down’ moments that led them to quit their toxic jobs
“He took credit for 6 months of my employment”: Employees share the moments that made them leave their toxic jobs
Gone are the days when people would quit quietly. You are now in the era of loud exits. On Reddit, many employees share the moment they realized their paychecks weren’t worth the peace of mind. Do you think your boss is toxic, abuses credit, and doesn’t respect boundaries? You are not alone. From credit-stealing managers to HR nightmares through personal tragedies, employees around the world are sharing the “last straw” that saw them finally leave their jobs and their bosses.
One user wrote: “The final straw was when my boss took credit for my 6 months of work in a company-wide meeting. I resigned the next day. In my resignation letter, I detailed every project I did and explicitly stated ‘What project did I do?’ [Boss’s Name] He will now claim he did. HR called me for an exit interview and I heard he received a formal warning.” Now it appears that this exit was well executed.
Another user talked about a toxic boss who blamed him for his mistake in a public place. “For me, it was when my manager literally blamed me for something completely out of my control, in front of the whole team. I packed my bags and left, I couldn’t handle the disrespect anymore. Some moments make you realize it’s not worth staying, no matter what.”
We often expect our workplace to support us during personal tragedies. However, for some offices, this seems difficult. “My mother took so long to die, she refused to come back before she actually expired. My absence was too much for the workplace, so I received an email less than 48 hours after she died saying I wouldn’t have a job waiting for me when I got back because ‘you gotta understand, we’re drowning here’. My partner suggested I go and beg for my job. I said no. I’m drowning like a champ.”
Another usage told a similar story. “My dad needed triple bypass surgery and I was told I couldn’t be offline that day. Yes, my dad is in surgery but I need to check emails. It’s ridiculous.”
Another user responded to the post above: “My husband had this when his mother was dying. She was on her last two days and they told him he would have to choose between work and family, and they couldn’t guarantee his position if he chose family. We were with her in the end. He resigned shortly after that.”
