“Husband and kids only”: Woman says she’s not invited to family wedding, Redditor advises her to be petty

In a Reddit post that quickly made us wonder if taking “the high road” was really worth it, a woman seeks advice after being the only member of her nuclear family left out of a big family wedding. After 20 years of marriage and decades of “playing nice,” the bridge had not only burned; It was bombed with nuclear weapons.

According to the post she wrote on r/EntitledPeople, the tension began when the mail arrived. Although the initial ticket seemed comprehensive, the official invitations told a very different story. “Save the date it was addressed to husband and family. The couples shower invitation is addressed to him only. He was really upset and went to ask his mom if I was really invited. I’m not. “She brought up his sister so my niece is not inviting me but wants my husband and kids to attend.”

According to the poster, the “exciting” behavior was not a long-term habit, but rather a single moment of maternal protectiveness following the death of her father-in-law 18 months earlier.

“At the funeral, my other niece (F20) said some harsh things to my younger daughter. I asked her to apologize to my youngest. (That’s all). Instead, I was accused of destroying the family. I was attacked for defending my child. Sel sent a message justifying her daughter’s words.”

For more than two decades, the poster has claimed she was the backbone of family harmony, making her exclusion seem like an absolute betrayal.

“For the past 25-plus years, I’ve always been helpful… Whatever they wanted to do was agreeable and short-term, I tried to be helpful and agreeable. This is the first time I’ve ever stood up to them.” As the wedding date approaches, the family is on high alert. The children are conflicted, the husband is angry, and the mother-in-law keeps her head down. “My teens are realizing this. One is adamant she won’t attend without me. The other isn’t sure what to do, doesn’t want to let her grandmother down. Husband is angry. MIL is playing Switzerland.”

The comments section wasn’t interested in the “highway.” Instead, thousands of users encouraged the poster to lean into disdain of varying degrees of pettiness. “No one shows up. No one sends a gift. Period,” one user wrote.

Another shared his own experience. “Young me took the high road. I’m older… No. You’re going low, I’m pulling you up. We’re an energy match, baby. No one’s going to show up. No gift will be bought. No contact. You’re insulting my child, hurting my kind, saying bad things to my child… All bets are off.”

But the best advice was when one of the users asked her and her family to take a vacation. Frivolous and fun, all in one simple action. “Go on vacation and post photos of the wedding with the caption ‘there’s nowhere else we’d rather be’ or something like that. Then send a very generic wedding card signed by the husband and kids only 😈”

Another took it a step further. “Just send a card. After the wedding. With a photo of the whole family at Disney World or somewhere amazing with the caption ‘We visited here on (wedding date) when we all had free time.'” Make it a generic wedding card, as you send it to a co-worker you barely know.
