City of Temples: India is world-famous for its spiritual and cultural heritage. However, when it comes to a place where history and spirituality meet on every street and corner, the name of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, comes first. Bhubaneswar is officially designated as a ‘Temple City’ in India. The city is a fascinating living museum of ancient Kalinga architecture…

Bhubaneswar earned this title because of its rich collection of Hindu temples, many of which date back more than 1,000 years and represent classic Kalinga architecture. The title comes from the number of its temples and its heritage value. (Image: Pexels)

Heritage of Thousands of Temples: Bhubaneswar’s history dates back more than 2,500 years. It is said that in ancient times there were more than 7,000 temples here, of which about 500 are still safe. This city not only serves as a religious centre, but is also the most effective and efficient means of understanding the evolution of Indian architecture. The ancient craftsmanship used in constructing its temples is a true testament to human ingenuity.

Nowadays, although some ancient ruins remain in ruins, the city still maintains an impressive architectural heritage extending from the 6th century AD to the 15th century and beyond. (Image: Unsplash)

The most important cultural resource of this city is the “Lingaraja Temple”. Built in the 11th century, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered a fine example of Kalinga style architecture. Its main peak is located at an altitude of 180 feet. A miracle achieved in that era without the help of any modern technology, the characters and stories carved on the walls of the temple look impressive and vivid to this day.
