‘The ego arrives before the traveler’: Iran embassy mocks new Trump-themed US passports for 2026

The United States is gearing up for a landmark event – the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in July – but a new commemorative edition has stolen the spotlight from the celebrations. The White House has confirmed that the United States will issue a limited number of passports bearing the image of President Donald Trump, surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and his signature embossed in gold.

The “National Passport” was first reported by Fox News, and is part of a broader “Freedom250” rollout that includes events such as UFC250 Fight and the Great American State Fair. While the administration views it as a “renewal of national pride,” the international community and social media users have very different interpretations.

The booklet mocks Iran

In a turn for diplomatic commentary, the Iranian embassy in Mumbai took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer harsh criticism. Using a mix of English and Hindi, the embassy’s post quickly went viral for its frank tone. “So, US passports may now have Donald Trump’s picture inside? Finally, a document where the ego arrives before the traveler. Bhai yeh passport nahi, self-promotion booklet pura lag raha hai 😂”

Other popular opinion suggested that the design may be an intentional strategy by the United States government to reduce the number of people seeking American citizenship. “I think there is a deeper layer to this. This may be a CIA and US government strategy to limit immigrants’ citizenship applications. Think about it, clearly no one wants this passport now. What a masterstroke,” one user hypothesized.

One user commented, “Thank God my condition is good until 2032 😂😂😂.” Many users also pointed out that even in countries with a long tradition of leadership worship, the passport usually remains a neutral space.

One commentator noted, “There are 43 monarchies in the world today… and none of them have a picture of their kings or queens on their passports. In fact, none of the 195 countries have pictures of their leaders on their passports.”

For those who want a piece of history, the White House confirmed to the BBC that the design will be available to “any US citizen” who applies once the rollout begins. However, there’s a catch: They will only be available at the Washington Passport Agency, and will only remain in circulation as long as supplies last.
