It is known that Gujarat has been home to many entrepreneurs who have very strong business acumen. In the past decades, entrepreneurs from Gujarat have built small business ventures and commodity trading companies into some of the most successful companies in India.

Many of the entrepreneurs mentioned below had humble origins before entering international business.

Here are 10 Gujarati entrepreneurs whose stories have made for some great business success stories.

1. Dhirubhai Ambani

Born in Chorwad, Gujarat, Dhirubhai Ambani started out as a small businessman, but then went on to found Reliance Industries, which quickly established itself as one of India’s largest conglomerates in petrochemicals, telecommunications, retail and energy.

At the height of his legacy, his business empire was worth billions of dollars globally.

2. Mukesh Ambani

He served as Chairman of Reliance Industries and expanded the group by diversifying into telecom, digital services, retail and energy industries, making Reliance one of the largest Indian business groups.

His wealth is currently estimated at more than 100 billion US dollars, making him among the richest people in the world.

3. Gautam Adani

Born in Ahmedabad, he started out in the diamond industry and later founded the Adani Group, which diversified its interests into ports, airports, logistics, energy, mining and infrastructure sectors.

His net worth fluctuates but is widely reported in the US$80-100 billion bracket.

4. Karsanbhai Patel

Karsanbhai Patel started selling his home-made soap powder using his bicycle. Later, Nirma became one of the most popular FMCG companies in India.

His wealth is estimated at about 4 to 5 billion dollars.

5. Uday Kotak

As a descendant of the Gujarati people, Uday Kotak founded Kotak Mahindra Finance which eventually became Kotak Mahindra Bank, one of the best private banks in India.

It owns assets valued at approximately 13 billion US dollars.

6. Dilip Shanghvi

The founder of a company called Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, he initially worked with his father in wholesale pharmaceutical sales. Finally, Sun Pharma became one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in India. His wealth is estimated at approximately 20 billion US dollars.

7. Pankaj Patel

The Chairman of Zydus Lifesciences has made a significant contribution in creating a renowned pharmaceutical organization known for its work in the field of healthcare. His net worth is estimated to be in the range of US$5-7 billion.

8. Sudhir Mehta

Sudhir Mehta is the Chairman of Torrent Group, which he has built into a leading pharmaceutical, power and gas distribution company in Gujarat. Its financial value is estimated at more than one billion US dollars.

9. Niranjan Hiranandani

The businessman of Gujarati origin, along with his brother, founded the Hiranandani Group, which later emerged as one of the largest real estate companies in India. His business empire puts him in the billionaire category with assets of over US$1 billion.

10. Badrash Shah

AIA Engineering was founded by Badresh Shah, who developed the company into a multinational conglomerate in the mining, cement and industrial manufacturing sectors. His wealth is estimated at approximately 1.5 to 2 billion US dollars.
