Former Meta software engineer Alvin Tan has gone viral after leaving behind a lucrative career in the tech industry to run a Hokkien Mee stall at a local food market. His unorthodox decision to trade corporate life for the food business sparked widespread discussion online.

Tan’s story gained attention after it was featured in an Instagram video by financial advisor and content creator Louisa Tay, who used his experience to spark a broader discussion about career fulfillment and the balance between passion and practicality.

The video begins with the caption “Meta software engineer to Hokkien Mee hawker”, introducing viewers to Tan’s move from the corporate technology sector to the food sector. Hokkien mee, the famous noodle dish enjoyed throughout Singapore and various parts of Southeast Asia, is now the center of his career.

Sharing his thoughts on the career change, Tan explained that his decision stemmed from a growing lack of interest in software engineering. “Because software engineering is boring,” he said frankly during his conversation with Tai.

When Tai pointed out that many aspiring professionals dream of a position at Meta, Tan offered a perspective shaped by his own experience within the company. “Big companies are all cutting costs. In fact, my team has restructured several times. It’s everyone’s dream, but once you join it, you’ll think of it like other things you can do in life,” he noted.

Although Tan admitted that his current income is much lower than what he was earning in the tech sector, he seemed comfortable with the trade-off. When asked about the difference in profits, he replied with a smile, “I guess I can’t compare. This is easily 2-3 times more.”

The video also gives a glimpse into his daily routine at the food stall, where he prepares and serves Hokkien Mee. Tan revealed that he currently runs the company alongside his girlfriend, noting that hiring additional staff is difficult given the financial realities of running a small food establishment. He also expressed his appreciation for her support and active participation in the project.

Despite leaving behind a stable and lucrative career path, Tan remains optimistic about the future. By offering advice to others who might be considering a big career change, he encouraged perseverance and adaptability.

“Don’t give up so easily. There will always be doors open for you. One day, you know, if this doesn’t work out, I can always find some other things to do,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of personal well-being and maintaining a sustainable work-life balance. Commenting on his current profession, Tan noted that his health will remain a priority if the physical demands of the job become exhausting.

“Taking rest is also important. Somehow, if cooking makes me feel sick as it often does, I will prioritize my health,” he added.

The story quickly resonated with social media users, many of whom praised Tan for pursuing a career he found personally meaningful rather than staying in a role solely for the financial rewards.

“AI can replace the job of a software engineer, but it cannot replace the Hokkien Mee hawker,” one user said.

Another commenter highlighted the ability to balance multiple interests and careers, writing: “I’m a chef and owner of a BBQ restaurant on the beach but I still have a lab behind my restaurant and do hardware engineering, boy you can do both 👌.”

Many users also focused on the quality of Tan’s food. “Just saying, this has to be one of the best Hokkien I’ve ever tasted,” a third user said.

Others dealt with the story with humor. “Maybe he secretly has an AI data center behind the kiosk running the algorithm to optimize the Hokkien mee recipe every day,” another commenter joked.

Many were also impressed by Tan’s attitude and outlook. “So humble and down to earth 🫡. With this mentality, you will succeed,” one user wrote.
