The death of a young employee nearly 10 years ago continues to weigh heavily on the Delhi-based founder. In a poignant post on LinkedIn, he looked back on the incident and shared how it changed the way he thinks about employee well-being and responsibility in the workplace.

His post resonated with many professionals, who reflected on the challenges faced by young employees living away from their families and the importance of checking in with their colleagues.

Share a painful memory

Vivek Mehra, founder and CEO of Vikramshila Research, said the incident occurred when he was serving as CEO of Sage Publishing. He recalled that a young employee moved from a small town to Dehradun for work. The employee was the only child of a widowed mother.

According to Mehra, the employee became seriously ill while staying alone, but was unable to get medical help in time. “He did not die in an accident. He was not murdered. He died because he lived alone, got sick, and was unable to get medical help in time,” Mehra wrote.

He admitted that the incident still makes him feel guilty. “It devastated me then because I’m still guilty to this day,” he said.

Mehra explained that the employee’s absence was not immediately noticed. By the time his colleagues and the HR team realized something was wrong and started looking for it, it was already too late.

He also revealed that he sent a compensation check to the employee’s mother due to the death of her son while working for the company. He wrote: “I sent his grieving mother a compensation check since he died while working for the company. She refused it. He made no mention of guilt.”

Former colleagues shared their memories

The post prompted several former colleagues to share their memories of the employee, whom they identified as Tanai Negi from the magazine’s production team.

Abhay S, who said he was a manager at the time, added that Tanai’s supervisors and teammates supported him and that he was not completely alone during his illness. “Time flies, but I still remember meeting him just 15 minutes before the power outage. Some memories never leave you,” he wrote.

He also said the tragedy led to important changes within the company, including mandatory health screenings and a stronger focus on employee well-being and work-life balance.

Others remembered those changes, too. Many people who worked there still remember Tanay and the annual health screening program introduced in his memory, said Manisha Matthews, a former Sage Publications employee. “I think most people who worked there at the time remember him and the annual mandatory health check that was introduced in his name. Such a precious life lost! It’s hard to forget.”

Publishing expert Divya Jyoti Munjal described the initiative as a meaningful tribute after a “precious life wasted”.
