Paying rent, buying groceries, and covering other monthly bills often feels like watching money disappear. But one woman from Bengaluru believes that these daily expenses should not always be considered a financial burden. Instead, she says, they are payments that make life safer, healthier and more comfortable.
Upasna Dogra shared her thoughts in a video on Instagram, encouraging people to change the way they think about spending. According to her, especially for those who belong to middle-class families, looking at expenses from a different perspective can help reduce the feelings of guilt that often come with spending money on basic needs.
She explains her view on spending
In the video, Dogra said that many people grow up thinking that spending money is something to be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary. This mentality often makes even basic expenses seem like a loss, she said.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but maybe it’s time we stop looking at our expenses as wasted money and start looking at them as money taking care of us. For many of us from middle-class families, our relationship with money has always been complicated. We grew up hearing: ‘Save money, don’t spend too much.’ Because of this, we rarely look at money as something to invest in our lives. Instead, all expenses start to feel like a loss. But what if we changed the way we looked at it?” She said.
She then used her monthly rent as an example. While paying Rs 20,000 every month may seem expensive, she said breaking it down into a daily cost helped her see it differently.

“Every month, when I pay the rent, the first thing that comes to my mind is that INR 20,000 is a lot of money.” But when I break it down, it is around INR 650 per day. This is INR 650 for a safe house that I can come back to after a long and stressful day.”
Dogra also spoke about grocery expenses, saying that spending around Rs 6,000 per month equates to around Rs 200 per day for food and nutrition. “So maybe financial awareness isn’t just about asking, ‘Where does my money go?’ Maybe it’s also about asking, ‘What does my money do for me?'” she added.
The clip was shared with the caption, “It’s just about perspective.”
Viewers say they relate to him
The video received several reactions from users who said they related to her message.
“This is a nice way to look at expenses,” one user wrote. “I needed to hear this today because rent always seems like a burden,” another said.
“This makes a lot of sense, money should also be seen as something that supports us,” one person commented. “Middle class guilt about spending is very real,” one comment said.
