As Neymar Jr announces his retirement from international football, fans say: ‘Not the end you deserve, king’
Neymar Jr. has officially hung up his boots, marking the end of one of the most iconic careers in Brazilian football. The footballer officially announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in Round 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 34-year-old striker bid farewell to the Seleção after 16 years.
Speaking to reporters after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium, an emotional Neymar confirmed that his journey with Brazil had come to an end. “I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and it ended here. It’s over now.” He exited international football by scoring Brazil’s only goal from the penalty spot.
His farewell carried a poignant sense of sameness. MetLife Stadium was also the place where Neymar announced himself to the world by scoring his first goal for Brazil on August 10, 2010, when he was 18 years old. After 16 years, he announced his retirement at the same place.
“The prince who never became king”
His retirement announcement quickly sparked a range of reactions from people online, with fans mirroring his brilliance. One widely shared comment summed up the mixed feelings surrounding his legacy: “A prince who never became king. He really tried!!!”
“End of an era, thanks for keeping us entertained and with good memories. Legend,” shared another fan of the 34-year-old footballer.
Another joked: “They will remember the crowns he never wore. I will remember the joy he gave. The prince who never became king.”
Another said: “Thank you Neymar, the eternal magician who lit up football with joy, goals and unforgettable flair – a legend forever.”
One Neymar fan said: “Sometimes the hardest goodbyes come after the hardest defeats. Thank you for everything you did for Brazil. Respect.”
“Neymar may not be like Messi or Ronaldo. But even the goats know who Neymar Jr. is. Football may never have given him a World Cup, but no one can deny the joy, magic and unforgettable moments he brought to the game. It’s heartbreaking to realize that this may have been his last World Cup. Obrigado, Ney,” one individual commented.
“This was not the ending you deserved ya f**king. Thank you for the memories. It wasn’t smooth sailing, but each challenge ultimately served a greater purpose in binding us together – success in your future endeavors,” one fan wished differently.
