Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has sparked controversy after sharing his views on the future of artificial intelligence. In a post on X, he said AI will eventually become the only technology that truly matters, saying it has the potential to reshape every other field.

According to Vembu, AI is not just another technology, but something that can improve or replace many existing technologies over time. His comments sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing that AI will change every industry, while others said it should be seen as a tool rather than a solution to every problem.

Vembu shares his vision for AI

“The premise behind the extraordinary wave of investment in AI is this: the only technology that will matter is AI. All other technologies will be absorbed into AI because they can all be reinvented and greatly improved by sufficiently powerful AI,” Fembo wrote in his post.

He also listed several areas where he believes AI can make a big difference. “For example, AI will help find solutions to climate change. AI will help find drugs to cure cancer. AI will help solve housing affordability in cities. AI will help us end war (okay, maybe that’s my hallucination!),” he wrote.

Vembu ended his post by asking users if they agreed with his main argument. “If you accept the basic premise and the concrete examples above, then the only technology worth working on is AI. Do you accept the premise?” he asked.

Users disagree about the role of AI

The post quickly attracted a wide range of opinions. While some users agreed with Vembu, many felt that AI should support other technologies rather than replace them.

One user wrote, “Sorry, I’m going to put you off here on this point. Since the early days of the computer, we’ve known that a computer is a dumb machine. It will only give output based on what is fed into it. So garbage in will garbage out. Good in doesn’t necessarily mean good out.”

Another user said that AI will become a part of almost every industry, but wondered if people should stop working on other technologies. “I think there will be an AI component in all areas of life. I’m not sure if we have to stop working on other technologies right away. AI taking over ‘thinking’ tasks at a basic level might be possible in the next decade. There’s tons of legacy code and we haven’t seen major solutions for that yet,” the user wrote.

One person described AI as a useful tool but not a complete solution. “AI will be an enabler… but it will not be the be-all and end-all…. A lot will have to happen for us to figure out how to harness this new ‘tool’ no doubt… but it should not be the only technology worth working on… it will be a very narrow way of looking at reality,” the caption read.

Another user shared a similar opinion, writing: “I accept the fact that AI will play a major role in every field, but we should not focus only on this. The field of technology is vast, and we should explore other areas as well.”

Not everyone disagreed. One user supported Vembu’s view, saying: “I agree with the hypothesis because it is about intelligence and the progress we have made so far is due to intelligence and cooperation. This does not mean that LLM holders will do everything. There will be other breakthroughs. If we cooperate with each other and with AI, it can do wonders.”

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu believes AI will solve humanity’s biggest problems, like finding cures for cancer and tackling housing affordability. However, the Internet and experts have expressed doubts, viewing AI as a tool rather than a complete solution.
