A 25-year-old man died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow after being released on bail in a false criminal case, police said. The incident took place in Gonda district when a man was found hanging inside his house from the ceiling fan on Friday.
After alerting the family members, the police reached the spot and found the suicide note in which the deceased, identified as Abhishek Srivastava, blamed a woman and her husband for pushing him to take the extreme step.
A suicide note blames the woman and her husband
According to Abhishek’s cousin, Udbhav Srivastava, the deceased was in a relationship with a married woman, Sonal Singh, who lived next door to her house. The two spoke frequently via chats and calls.
“Abhishek fell in love with a married woman living opposite his house, but the woman was pretending to be in love. In fact, she had her eyes on his property. Initially, she was in this game alone. When her husband, Ajit Singh, came to know about it, he also joined in the act. Then they both started extorting money from him,” the police said.

Rs 7 lakh were extorted in six months
Over the next six months, the couple allegedly extorted Rs 7 lakh from the engineer, including Rs 2 lakh for shopping and Rs 5 lakh in cash, police said. As Abhishek gradually realized the deception, he is said to have started distancing himself from the woman. However, she pressured him to continue the relationship.
When he refused, she filed a false case against him, accusing him of taking explicit photos of her and blackmailing her. Based on the complaint, the police arrested Abhishek and sent him to jail. He was later released.
After his release, the woman and her husband allegedly asked him for Rs 10 lakh to withdraw the case. They also allegedly threatened him that he would have to continue paying them money whenever they asked, even if it meant selling his properties or breaking the fixed deposits.
This alleged harassment has left Abhishek mentally shattered. On Thursday evening, he pinned 35 printouts of WhatsApp conversations and video call logs on the walls of his room, as evidence of blackmail, and died by suicide.
He wrote in the note: “I am still being harassed. I no longer want to live. My death is the responsibility of these two.”
Registered in the FIR
An FIR has been registered against the woman and her husband under sections relating to abetment to suicide, Kotwali city station house officer Vivek Trivedi said. He added: “All aspects of the case are being investigated thoroughly.”
