A NASA astronaut photographed a glowing green aurora at the edge of the planet, and as the International Space Station moves forward, the aurora appears to shimmer and shine.

A NASA astronaut has stunned his fans by sharing a stunning video of the glowing northern lights over North America from the International Space Station (ISS). The clip was filmed by Johnny Kim, a first lieutenant in the US Navy, through the window of the International Space Station. The main attraction in the video is the glowing green aurora at the edge of the planet. As the International Space Station moves forward, the aurora borealis appear to sparkle and shine.
Another orange light also appears near Earth, and the astronaut points to forest fires burning in Calgary, Canada.

Sharing a stunning video of the glowing aurora in space on Instagram, Johnny Kim wrote, “Northern lights over North America, with fires visible in the Calgary area. September 8, 2025. Nikon Z9, 24mm, ISO 5000, f1.4, 1/5s.”
In response to the post, one user wrote: “I love seeing our world from this view. Thanks for sharing, Johnny.”
Another shared, “OMG, it’s one thing to catch them on Earth but seeing them from space? Amazing.”

Astronauts adjust their sleep plans due to solar storms
According to Space.com, astronauts on the International Space Station on ISS Expedition 73 have had to change some of their sleep plans due to recent solar storms that have increased radiation levels. To ensure their safety, the three Russian astronauts, Oleg Platonov, Sergei Ryzhikov, and Alexei Zubritsky, were asked to spend a night in the laboratory module of the International Space Station. The decision was made to be extremely careful while the crew was exposed to higher than normal radiation due to solar activity.
The mission, which began on April 19, 2025, includes Russian crew members Platonov, Ryzhikov and Zubritsky, along with NASA astronauts Mike Finke, Johnny Kim and Zina Cardman. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Kimiya Yui is also part of the team. They will all remain aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft until December.
