Forget the rocking chair. Vidya Kaur’s ‘Dadi’ is more interested in the driver’s seat.

At 72, This ‘Dadi’ From Jammu Is Beyond Age Stereotypes, And Her Parallel Attitudes Are Better Than Yours
For most of us, the word Dadis is synonymous with hidden sweets that appear out of thin air in her hand the moment she is there. With gray hair, withered hands, and immeasurable love. And in a world that often tries to “retire” women once they reach a certain age, the 72-year-old former school principal from Jammu proves that the only thing you have to give up in your 70s is equipment. While most people her age are told to ‘take it easy’, Vidya is busy navigating the chaotic streets of Jammu, proving that ‘log kya kahenge’ (what people will say) has no place in the rearview mirror.
Who is this driver Daddy?
Vidya’s story revolves around a constant desire for independence throughout her life. Married when she was 19, she spent 40 years shaping minds as a teacher and eventually a school principal. But when retirement came, the “quiet life” seemed a bit quiet. She wanted to fulfill a decades-long dream: getting behind the wheel. The road has not been smooth. When she attended driving school for the first time when she was 60, she was met with skepticism. The coaches described her as “imperfect” and suggested that coping with heavy traffic at her age was difficult.

Her response? She bought the car anyway.
Determined to prove the naysayers wrong, Vidya bypassed the formal schools she doubted and sought help from a neighbor. I’ve practiced every day to replace the “comfort of retirement” with clutch control and gear changes. Within a month, she was leaving people and stereotypes behind in her car!
Watch her videos on her grandson’s Instagram page (vishal__riderz_jk14) and you’ll know that Dadi is known for maintaining a fast pace and holding her own on busy highways.
