A surprising case came to light from China, where a private company fired its engineer for repeatedly entering the bathroom for a long period of time during working hours. The matter came to light when the engineer went to court regarding his dismissal and the whole story became public. Now this has become increasingly popular on social media and is being talked about by netizens.

The employee used to take frequent bathroom breaks, but the company took his job

According to the information, this person, surnamed Li, had been working as an engineer in a company in Jiangsu Province for more than 10 years. The company alleged that Lee repeatedly went to the bathroom during work hours, and sometimes did not return for hours. For this reason, the company terminated his services.

The case reached court

After being fired from his job, Lee went to court against his former employer. He claimed that his dismissal was wrong and unfair. During the hearing of this case, the company presented footage from surveillance cameras in its defense. According to the footage, Lee took 14 very long bathroom breaks over the course of 30 days between April and May 2024. The longest break between these breaks was about four hours.

The employee said he had hemorrhoids, so he took frequent breaks.

The company also said that when Lee was absent from his seat for an extended period, management tried to contact him via the chat app, but received no response. The company said that Lee’s responsibilities were so great that it was necessary for him to always be available during business hours. At the same time, he told me in his explanation that he suffers from health problems. He gave evidence in court about medicines related to hemorrhoids, which his partner had purchased online in May and June 2024. Apart from this, he also showed medical records related to the surgery he had in January 2025. He told me that due to illness, he had to go to the bathroom repeatedly.

The court ruled in favor of the company

Li and his lawyers asked the court to grant them compensation of 3,20,000 yuan (about 45,000 dollars) for the contract that the company terminated. However, the court ruled in this case in favor of the company. The court held that the time Lee spent in the bathroom while working exceeded normal physical requirements. The court also said that Lee did not inform the company in advance of his health problem and did not take medical leave. Apart from this, the company had also obtained permission from the labor union before sacking him, which was correct as per the rules.

Users gave their feedback

As soon as this matter came to light, a heated debate erupted on social media. Many users described the company’s decision as inhumane and cruel, while some justified the court’s decision. “Getting sick is not a choice for anyone, so it’s wrong to fire an employee for going to the bathroom,” one user wrote. While another user said: “Wow, if someone has been missing for hours and has not provided information to the company, action is necessary.”
