Food delivery apps charge customers extra for handling and delivery fees, which means the food must be delivered directly to their doorstep. However, the recent incident in Bengaluru highlights the challenges faced by delivery drivers. A Zomato rider expressed his frustration after he faced difficulty in delivering a single order in an upscale neighbourhood. The passenger said that the house is located deep in the complex, where vehicles are not allowed. This forced him to walk approximately 200 to 300 meters while carrying food.
The problem did not stop there. The knight first went downstairs, then went up again and walked again to reach the client’s house. Despite asking the customer to go downstairs, they refused and told him not to accept orders from that area in the future. The knight also stated that after this effort, he was not even offered a glass of water. He noted that delivery agents are often expected to follow each customer’s instructions without question.
Bengaluru Rider shares his struggle
The Zomato rider said: “I received an order in a villa. Do you know how far I had to go? It’s about 200-300 meters long. Moreover, the customer had demands. I told them: ‘Sir, I even went downstairs’. I didn’t know that after going down, I had to go back up and then go back to the last floor. I didn’t even realize that I went downstairs. There was a door too and I kept asking him to come down, but they didn’t come. Then they told me to come back. Moreover That, they said, “Don’t take Zomato orders.” I mean, at least feel ashamed, and offer some water. Instead, they told me not to take orders next time. Is this the respect the delivery boy has?”
The agent added: “I also asked security if vehicles were allowed to enter. He said they were not, so I had to walk a long distance to get just one order. The company always says to do what the customer asks, wherever they call you. Even if they call you to the top of the hill, you have to go and deliver. I tell everyone this, getting into this kind of work seems useless, and besides, customers are like that. You can’t even say anything to them.”
The video posted on Instagram came with the caption: “Please respect the delivery worker. Delivery work is not that easy. Even after a lot of hard work, the company, customers and even delivery workers often do not appreciate the life of a delivery worker.”
Some support the passenger, others stand at the customer’s side
In response to the post, one user wrote: “Personally, if a delivery person asks me to come downstairs to pick up my order, I usually do it. It’s not a big deal for me and I understand that he might be tired or in a hurry. However, at the same time, it’s important to acknowledge that doorstep delivery is part of their job. Most delivery apps like Zomato, Zepto, etc., charge handling and delivery fees, which obviously includes doorstep delivery. Since we pay for this service, it’s not unfair to We expect that, so while choosing to go downstairs is a personal choice and an act of understanding, it shouldn’t be something they criticize if they expect delivery to their door, complaints from customers so aren’t really warranted.
Another said: “You’re doing a great job, just don’t give up. Some people are like that, but they always try to stay strong and positive. God bless you.”
“This is the reality of Zomato. I have been there,” one comment read.
One person stated, “I think your issue is real. The customer’s statement is real. So you should send this video to your manager and tell your manager to escalate it to Zomato. Zomato is literally charging 100% more for the home delivery order. Zomato should be paying you guys more; there’s no need to complain about the recipient. The order was sent to you by Zomato, not by the customer.”
Another stated, “Now think about it: Does the pilot complain about the extra hours he flies, or the management consultant who works 12-15 hours a day, or the doctor who complains about the poor work-life balance? In fact, they don’t complain because they know it’s part of their job. Ultimately, society has made you weak by putting in your mind that you are weak, poor, and disrespectful. There is nothing to be ashamed of being a delivery person. In fact, I thank you guys for your service. But I want you to stop complaining, be strong, and work hard.”
Another added: “He’s complaining that he has to go all the way from one gate to another to deliver, but why is he complaining about that in the first place? The guy opened the door and the first word he said was thank you (was he being humble? Yes), did he say anything else? No. This guy ordering food is paying extra for the food, delivery fees, handling fees and platform fees for doorstep delivery, so why should the delivery guys make fun of him?” was his response to the delivery guy’s words. Yes, your job is acting Challenging, it cannot be denied that asking someone for water is also a good habit, but mockery and complaints are not a good habit either.
So far, Zomato has not responded to rider frustration. The delivery agent also did not share any update on whether the company has contacted him regarding the issue.
