There is no doubt that train journeys are fun when traveling with friends and family. The endless chatter and ever-changing landscapes outside make the trip as memorable as the destination itself. But impurity is perhaps one of the biggest annoyances. It doesn’t matter if you are traveling in 2AC, 3AC or sleeper class; The problem persists everywhere. From stained windows to overflowing trunks, the view can sometimes ruin the magic of a scenic drive.
But what if the people responsible for keeping the coaches clean are also responsible for contributing to the mess? Recently, a video surfaced on social media, showing a similar traumatic event.
OBHS throws trash from a moving train
The clip, recorded by a passenger, shows an On Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS) employee dumping rubbish on the tracks outside a moving train. The employee then replaced the trash can with another plastic bag, seemingly indifferent to the environmental damage caused. The camera then panned to the passenger, who showed a frustrated expression.
The Internet criticizes the inappropriate act
“OBHS employees are contractual employees recruited through tenders, earning nearly Rs 15,000 per month for shifts exceeding nine hours, with overtime at double rates mandated by labor laws, yet they face criticism for low accountability and exhaustion in maintaining cleanliness across over 1,100 train pairs,” a user criticized.
Another noted, “Everyone is busy keeping their places clean by throwing garbage outside. Our civic sense is still in 1925.” “Every time you throw garbage on the railway tracks, remember – someone has to risk their life cleaning it up. Respect their work. Keep our railway tracks clean,” one individual explained.
“What is Rail Seva doing? Your worker is tearing garbage bags out of the train’s trash can and throwing them straight out the door of a moving train! This is disgusting, illegal, and ruining our country,” one person commented sternly. “The harsh reality of Indian Railways: coach overcrowding, endless delays, queue anxiety, berth chaos. Millions travel, and few feel comfortable. It works…but it shouldn’t feel like survival,” he said in a heartfelt note.
