Stories of love, devotion and sacrifice are often heard in books and films, but the true story that unfolded in Bihar’s East Champaran has made people emotional. On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, when the whole world was expressing love, retired panchayat secretary Balkishon Ram, who belongs to an ordinary family, showed such love towards his wife, which forced everyone to think. He spent Rs 65 lakh to build a 65 feet high ‘temple’ in memory of his late wife Sharda Devi and installed her statue in it.

In this temple built in Bhuvan Chhabra village in Chakia district of East Champaran district, Balkishon Ram offers flowers and vermilion before the statue of his wife every morning and evening. He says he never saw God, but his wife was God to him. The lamp is lit every day in the temple. Sharda Devi loved tea, so a cup of tea is kept in front of her statue every day. Lunch and dinner are also served respectfully.
The wife died in 2022
Balkishon Ram says that Sharda Devi had been suffering from heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure since 2007. The treatment continued, but six months before his retirement in 2022, he suffered a heart attack and died. Balkishon is completely devastated by the death of his wife. He has invested his entire retirement fund, about Rs 65 lakh, in his wife’s memory. He says that even if he had Rs 65 crore, he would have spent it.

His voice becomes hoarse as he recalls the struggle of his life. He had to drop out of school after his father died in his childhood. At that time Sharda Devi sold her jewelry and inspired him to continue his studies. She worked as a worker, took care of the house and always encouraged him. Balkishon says he was able to become the panchayat secretary only because of his wife’s sacrifices and hard work. Now, even on social media, people are praising her and saying that this is true love that remains alive even after death.
