Despite the different cultural traditions between India and Israel, interesting similarities emerge in many festivals.
India and Israel may be geographically distant, but the cultural and spiritual roots of both countries seem connected to each other in many ways. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Israeli Parliament during his visit, he made special reference to the shared values and similarities between festivals between the two countries. He said India’s Vasudeva Kutumbakkam spirit considers the world as one family, while Israeli traditions also emphasize humanity and moral responsibility.
In his speech, the Prime Minister said that ‘religion’ in Indian culture means not only worship but also right behavior and performance of duty. Likewise, in the Jewish tradition, halakha inspires us to live life based on moral rules and principles. Both traditions emphasize that faith should be reflected not only in thought, but also in behavior and action. This common thinking gives a strong moral foundation for both countries.
Speaking of festivals, there are striking similarities between the festivals of India and Israel. Hanukkah celebrated in Israel is the Festival of Lights, where the message of hope and faith is given through lamps of light. Around this time, the festival of Diwali is celebrated in India, which is seen as the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Both festivals symbolize light, enthusiasm and sharing happiness with family.
Likewise, in India, the festival of colors Holi is celebrated with happiness and enthusiasm. This festival removes social discrimination and gives a message of love and brotherhood. Around the same time, Purim is celebrated in Israel, a symbol of joy, celebration and communal joy. Both festivals unite people and add positive color to life. Apart from this, Makar Sankranti of India and Sukkot of Israel are also similar. Makar Sankranti is a festival to express gratitude towards harvest and nature. Likewise, the Feast of Tabernacles is also celebrated to mark the harvest and God’s blessings. Both festivals show a connection with nature.
Prime Minister Modi also said that India and Israel are democratic countries, moving towards the future by learning from their history. The partnership between the two countries is not only limited to the national interest, but also contributes to global stability and prosperity. Cooperation in areas such as science, technology, agriculture and security is constantly strengthening.
