Northeastern Indians have long faced racism in their country, where they were mocked for their appearance, accent or food. Many of them shared stories of being called “outsiders” even while living, studying or working in big cities.
Now, an online video shows one such painful moment, as a man from the North East faced a situation he will never forget during his visit to Mumbai. What started as an ordinary day quickly turned into a harsh reminder of how deep racial prejudice runs.
A painful encounter on a street in Mumbai
The short clip begins with a man surrounded by four or five children, all of whom laugh and call him “Chinese.” Confused and hurt, he asks them why they call him that.
Instead of stopping, the children continue to tease him, shouting words like “ching ching” and laughing as if it were a game.
Trying to remain calm, the man confronts them and says, “I’m Indian, not Chinese. Please don’t call me that.” To prove his point, he even took out his Aadhaar card and showed it to them, explaining that he is from the North East and is an Indian like everyone else.
But his words don’t seem to move them. The children continue to laugh and taunt him, making rude hand gestures as he calmly walks away from the scene.

The title of the post reads: “Calling Northeasterners ‘Chinese’ is not cool! It’s 2025 and people still think racism is a joke?”
The video also carries an on-screen message: “I will never visit Mumbai again” and “Stop racism against the people of North East”.
The caption below adds: “So, a young man from the North East visited Mumbai and some teenagers are calling him ‘Chinese’ and ‘Ching Ching’ as if it was a joke.”
Internet users express shock and anger
The video was shared just a few hours ago, and has already garnered over 900 upvotes and numerous comments.
“Big role for their illiterate parents,” one user wrote.
Another commented: “Even educated rich kids have this attitude too. People are doomed by problematic popular culture.”
One added: “People with a very privileged background are far more racist than they are online.”
“2 chaat maru in pachu ko,” one person said angrily.
Another said: “These children are greatly influenced by the Internet, but it is their school and parents’ fault because they failed to teach them basic morals.”
