In India, love stories often come with unexpected twists and turns. While some parents are supportive when their children choose their partners, others cling to traditional expectations. For many young people, coming out with their family can be one of the most challenging experiences.
A recent Reddit post captures one of these emotional moments: A young man shared how his mother reacted to finding out about his girlfriend. His candid account sparked online discussions about parental control, privacy and the challenges of growing up in conservative families.
How it all started
The post, titled “My mom cried when she found out about my daughter,” begins with the man explaining that he was home for a few months preparing for his final CA and CFA exams. He lives in a tier 3 city and was excited when a local newspaper organized a dandiya night, a rare event in his hometown. “I had some connections at that company and got a free pass,” he wrote on Reddit.
He invited his 21-year-old girlfriend to join him, and the two decided to attend the event together. Because he knew that his family rarely trusted his explanations for going out, he told them that he would go with his male friends. “It was like a secret date between us,” he wrote.
The moment things fall apart
The evening went well. They danced, had fun and hugged each other before going home. But one small detail revealed everything. “Her cologne (which was Bellavita, and my sister has the same thing) had transferred onto my clothes, and when I came back around 10:30 p.m., my mom noticed it right away,” he said.
When he was interrogated, he tried to cover it up by saying that he was with friends, but his mother called them, and they had no idea, not knowing about his plan. “She was so upset and angry, she was on the verge of tears,” he wrote.
Then things escalated when his younger sister (17 years old) revealed that she had seen him talking to a girl on the phone a few days ago. “My mother snatched my phone and saw the pictures I had recently taken… and she started crying like crazy,” he said.
Family confrontation
According to his post, the situation quickly turned into chaos. He wrote: “Daddy slapped me. The whole family was together. The worst things were said. They asked for my girlfriend’s number, but I refused.” The man said he felt “humiliated and suffocated” after the incident, adding that he had no one close enough to trust.
Frustrated by the way the evening ended, he added: “I told her it was none of her business because I’m an adult (21 million) and I have the right to make my own choices.” He ended the post by saying, “One thing I know is that I will never want to live with my parents once I start making money.”
The Internet is reacting to his story
The post was shared on October 15, quickly garnering more than 1,900 upvotes and garnering widespread sympathy.
“Your family seems very controlling. Just take your time and leave when you get a job,” one user wrote.
Another added: “He could have said he was using his sister’s perfume.”
Others sympathized, calling it a “model family” scenario. One person advised me, “Stay firm on your limits. It’s 1 ungli doge to poa haath le lenge.”
