It’s that time of the year when Indian families go into full cleaning mode, brooms in one hand and cloths in the other, as Diwali approaches. Every corner is cleaned, dusted and polished. What starts as a simple clean-up often turns into a mini treasure hunt with missing items suddenly turning up.

For one Redditor, this year’s Diwali cleanup turned into a shock. While cleaning out an old DTH set-top box, their mother found a hidden stash that no one in the family expected: 2,000 Indian rupees of old 2,000 rupee notes, which were officially withdrawn from circulation in 2023.

My mom’s big discovery during Diwali Savai

In the post titled ‘Biggest Diwali Savai of 2025’, the Redditor shared the experience online, writing: “During Diwali Savai, my mom found Rs 2 lakh in old Rs 2,000 notes… hidden inside an old DTH box that my dad probably kept there in demonetization times. We haven’t told him yet. Please suggest how to proceed.” The post included an image showing stacks of Rs 2,000 notes.

A surprise worth Rs 2 lakh broke the internet

Many users were amused, while others couldn’t help but wonder how someone could forget such a large amount.

One user joked: “Just give me that much money omg, forgetting Rs 2 lakh!)”

Another commented: “Feko mat ise mujhe de do (One person’s trash is another person’s treasure).”

Someone asked curiously: “How can anyone forget so much money?)”

One person jokingly wrote: “Raddi vala de dega 8-10 rupees change me (the scrap dealer will give me 8-10 rupees in return),” while another joked: “Send me 4-5 notes for me… your kids. Ko dikhaunga aaj se 10-15 saal baad (Brother, send me 4-5 notes… I will show them to my kids after 10-15 years From now on).”

Amid the jokes, practical suggestions also emerged. “These currencies are still legal tender despite being phased out. You can exchange them only at designated Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offices with a limit of 20,000,” an individual pointed out.

“Just go to your nearest RBI bank and exchange after filling the declaration. These Rs 2,000 notes are not demonetised, just removed from circulation. But remember to exchange them in batches of 5 to 10, as exchanging Rs 2,000 in one go may put you in some trouble. Different people will also help you,” read another tip.

A note worth Rs 2,000 was withdrawn

The Rs 2,000 note was introduced in 2016 after demonetisation. But as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) clean notes policy, they have been officially withdrawn from circulation. Banks have set October 7, 2023, as the last date for exchanging Rs 2,000 notes. After this deadline, exchanges are allowed only at 19 designated Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offices and there is a limit of Rs 20,000 per transaction.
