If you’ve been trying to mark your Diwali 2025 calendar and keep facing conflicting dates, you’re not alone. This year’s Festival of Lights seems to bring with it a bit of mystery along with its glamour. Across social media, WhatsApp groups, and even traditional panchangs (Hindu calendars), there has been a bit of controversy going on. Some say that Diwali will be celebrated on October 20, others are confident that it will be on October 21, and a few astrologers have mentioned the possibility of “splitting Diwali,” meaning that different regions or traditions may celebrate on different days. The French Embassy in India has captured this confusion perfectly through a light-hearted video.
“Are you confused about the date of Diwali?”
“Are you confused about the date of Diwali? We are! But one thing is certain: lights, joy and sweets await you! Watch our video on Deepavali – the festival of lights,” the embassy wrote on X.
The accompanying video shows embassy staff in humorous scenarios showing confusion around the date of Diwali. In one scene, an employee jokes about buying kurtin because Diwali seems to fall on different days. He said: “Mainay toh 2 kapray khareede hain.”
Another was seen talking to a flower seller, asking him to deliver the flowers on the 20th, while the seller insists that Diwali is on the 21st. The employee then decides to split the order, half on October 20 and the rest on October 21.
One of the people in the video receives an invitation to a “Diwali party” but is unsure what date to attend. “Dono din mana lo, problem solved,” a colleague advises her, suggesting a celebration on both days.
In the kitchen, one of the chefs asks if the cashew katlis he is preparing are for the 20th or the 21st, and his boss replies that they should prepare enough for both days.
The video concludes with a message saying: “Whether it’s October 20th or 21st, the Diwali lights always shine.”
