Airports are often crowded and stressful, but one IndiGo passenger recently experienced something inspiring. While performing a routine checkup, he came across an employee with hearing and speech impairment. The employee working at the check-in counter was caught patiently helping passengers, leaving a strong impression on the traveller. He praised airlines for providing opportunities for people with disabilities, calling it a “beautiful step towards inclusion.”

What stood out most was the employee’s ability to handle tasks with such “grace” despite the challenges. Soon after the clip went viral on social media, IndiGo responded to the post, saying they were touched by the recognition and committed to supporting employees of all abilities.

Sharing the clip of the staff on the ground, the passenger wrote, “A truly impactful initiative by IndiGo. Providing jobs for speech and hearing impaired people at the check-in counter. This is a beautiful step towards inclusion, and he is helping passengers with such grace that it is simply inspiring.”

In response to the customer, Indigo wrote: “We were truly touched by your message. Our team embodies the power of empathy and inclusion. Thank you for recognizing their efforts and supporting our commitment to empowering all abilities.”

Responding to the post, one user wrote: “It’s good to see more companies becoming inclusive. Shell India is one company I have seen hiring differently-abled people since 2017 at its petrol pumps in Vadodara.”

Another said: “We should make sign language compulsory in schools.”

One comment read: “It’s a masterstroke. Now people won’t argue with him when they’re angry about airline services. They’ll have good PR.”

One person said: “I met this guy at T1D Delhi. He is very professional, with an eye-catching smile. While interacting with him, I noticed that he had to go the extra mile to communicate with me. At that moment, I realized how much I can do to make conversations inclusive. This meeting inspired me to start learning sign language, so that people like him never have to put in all the effort on their own.”

Another added: “It’s an excellent initiative by IndiGo. However, I did notice one problem: the badge the employees wear (blue with small white text) indicating that they are speech-impaired is too small. Often times, elderly passengers get frustrated when they don’t receive a response because they don’t understand the situation. I’ve reported this to IndiGo several times through feedback, but it doesn’t seem to have changed. Preferably we need a prominent badge in red or yellow (not blue) with a hearing loss symbol sign that everyone should understand.”

In 2024, IndiGo introduced special services to assist passengers with disabilities, including a designated check-in desk for people with disabilities. At Delhi Airport, more than 20 employees with special abilities are currently working. The program is designed to support diversity and inclusion within the workplace. It also gives these employees a chance to demonstrate their skills.
