A security guard in Mumbai’s Goregaon West area was injured on Thursday morning after a stray dog suddenly attacked him near the school entrance. The incident, which occurred at around 9.40am on December 11, was recorded on a CCTV camera, and the footage has since gone viral on social media.
The video shows the guard walking through the gate while two stray dogs wander inside the building. Moments later, one of the dogs approached him. While the guard was heading towards the entrance, the dog jumped on him and bit his left shoulder. The guard was seen struggling for a few seconds before he was able to pull the dog out with his free hand. Then the animal lunges, and soon another guard with a stick rushes in to help.
The attack has renewed concerns among residents about the increasing aggressiveness of stray dogs and the safety of people moving through the area. Online discussions reflect growing concern, and an official response from authorities is still awaited.
The incident comes at a time when Maharashtra has reported more than 30,000 dog bite cases over the past six years – an average of about 1,369 cases per day. Highlighting the increase in cases in both urban and rural areas, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the state assembly on Wednesday that 30 people had died of rabies between 2021 and 2023.
He was responding to a question asked by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sunil Prabhu, who expressed concern over the rise in the number of stray dogs in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Kalyan-Dombivli. Shinde also pointed out that the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, are now being implemented at the state level following the government directives issued in March.
