A video from Rajasthan is drawing attention after a police officer fined an electric vehicle (EV) owner for not carrying pollution under control (PUC), which EVs do not need. The incident sparked confusion and criticism on social media.

The accident took place in Nagaur, where a police officer stopped a man driving a Tata Tiago EV. The vehicle was initially stopped due to a sunshade attached to the window.

The electric car owner will be fined during a routine inspection

During the check, the officer fined the driver Rs 200 for the umbrella. But the situation took a strange turn when the officer asked for a pollution under control (PUC) certificate.

When the driver was unable to show this, the officer issued another fine of Rs 1,500. The driver tried to explain that electric cars do not require a PUC certificate, but his point was not accepted at the time. A video of this exchange is now being shared widely, showing the argument between the driver and the officer.

Reports indicate that an argument over the umbrella led to further confusion, and a PUC fine may have been issued in error during the exchange. Authorities have now said the matter is being looked into.

As the video spread, many people reacted strongly to the incident. Some pointed to a lack of awareness of the rules for electric vehicles, while others criticized the way the situation was handled.

One user said: “Sidi’s machine is creative and good at thinking too… Asking a PUC from an electric car is like asking a calculator to give a weather forecast. Admitting a mistake is not an option, just keep changing the reason. Explain the law to the public, but you haven’t found the time yet to explain the basics to yourself.”

Another wrote: “Ignorance with arrogance – a deadly combination!! PUC for an EV… Mid-career training for cops is a must on many accounts including the tech pod so they at least know what it is..!!!”

“It’s even more important that these people’s videos go viral because they don’t even know it and don’t even accept it,” one person commented.

Another said: “The police recruit fools, that’s why they will destroy the country. These policemen can do anything for corruption and bribery.”

One person added: “The PUC certainly doesn’t apply to electric vehicles but unfortunately it can happen if you have blinds on any window while driving as seen in some videos.”
