This rare railway crossing showcases the engineering skills of Indian Railways and meticulous traffic management. Signal operators closely monitor every movement to ensure safe travel
Precise control of train movements eliminates the possibility of accidents. (News 18 Hindi)
Indian Railways, often referred to as the lifeline of the country, facilitates the travel of millions of passengers every day from one end of the country to the other. While many have experienced railway lines intersecting each other, few know about a unique railway point in India where trains from four directions converge without any accidents. This magnificent sight can be found at Nagpur Railway Station in Maharashtra, known as the only diamond crossing in the country.
Why is it called the diamond crossing?
Nagpur Railway Station is one of the busiest and most important junctions in India. Here, the country’s four major railway lines intersect, forming a diamond shape when viewed from above, hence the name “Diamond Crossing”.
An intersection for trains from all sides
Cross roads include:
- Mumbai Howrah Road
- Delhi-Chennai route
- Kazipet-Nagpur Road
- Nagpur-Itarsi Road.
Thousands of trains, including Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and several high-speed trains, pass these routes daily.
Why don’t collisions happen?
The question arises: How do trains avoid collisions when they come from the four directions? The answer lies in the interlocking system and automatic signal technology. This system ensures that only one train is allowed to pass through the crossing point at any given time. Once a train crosses, the signal is activated for the next track. This precise control of train movements eliminates the possibility of accidents.
Pride of railway engineering
The Diamond Crossing at Nagpur is a testimony to the technical expertise and engineering prowess of Indian Railways. It embodies the delicate balance between traffic management and safety. Railway staff and signal operators carefully monitor train movements, ensuring every journey remains safe.
