Two American sisters traveling in India with their family claimed that a man had been photographed secretly from a hotel window while they were holding next to the swimming pool in Gorgram. The video they posted about the accident, which led to a wave of online apologies and anxiety of Indian users.
Women, RORY and Sage, shared a short video on Instagram through their @roryandsageofficial handle, which includes more than 16,000 followers. The clip was shared a week ago.
In the clip, the camera grows on the hotel room window where the man appears to be carrying and photographing his phone. The sisters, unclearly, say that they were simply relaxing next to the pool when they noticed that the man watched them and perhaps recorded them.
Besides the video, they wrote, “Well, it seems that we will have to find a new time. If you are a female planning to come to India, I will not come without a body guard for a man. Whether you take a shower or his clothes completely, we find this behavior very common in India.”
Their publication raised reactions quickly online, with many users stuck to support sisters and apologize for the behavior they suffered from. One user wrote, “I am from India and I am sorry, really sorry.” Another added, “As an Indian, this is unfortunately common here. The old, retired uncles that possess you.”
Some have advised how to deal with the accident. “Please report this hotel, not the attendees present, but some senior management and will take action, if you cannot even submit a report to the police. This should not be taken lightly and we need strict actions from foreigners, so that they can start taking local women seriously.
Others referred to a wider issue, saying that the problem is not limited to foreign tourists. “Traveling to India to spend a Pikini vacation will not only destroy your vacation boys, even if you walk in PJS men, they will continue to stare … so don’t go at all that we are not safe!”
Another person wrote, “We are sorry to create insecurity for you. People in our society never learn to mind their own actions. This is the same reason that we fight between us a lot …”
One of the users wrote: “Very sorry for any Indian person who leaked from your privacy, I found on social media, but the Indian people are very honest and India is a safe place for tourism.”
