Saudi Arabia experienced rare snowfall in its northern deserts around December 18, 2025, turning barren landscapes into snowy scenes.

This unusual event was caused by cold, low-pressure air systems from the Mediterranean Sea.

Areas such as Tabuk, Jabal al-Lawz, Hail, Al-Jawf, and the sand dunes near the UAE border witnessed snowfall.

For the first time in recorded history, snow fell on the interior deserts of Al-Jawf after heavy rain and hail.

Areas north of Riyadh, including Al-Ghat and parts of Al-Qassim, witnessed snowfall or frost.

Temperatures fell to -4 degrees Celsius (24.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas, with fog, strong winds and rain in others.

The Saudi Meteorological Authority confirmed the event, warning of slippery roads and low horizontal visibility.

Video clips showed residents celebrating in the snow, with camels appearing in the white deserts, and spread on social media.

9. Experts noted that winter snow recurs in the northern highlands such as Tabuk and Al-Jawf during the period from December to February.

Snowfall in the Al-Jawf Desert is extremely rare, with December 2025 being the first snowfall recorded.
