On Tuesday, user Nalini Unagar took to X to share her amazement at her domestic helper’s financial achievements. “My domestic helper came today looking really happy. She told me that she just bought a 3-bedroom apartment in Surat worth INR 60 lakh, spent INR 4 lakh on furniture and took a loan of only INR 10 lakh,” she wrote in a post that has now gone viral.
“I was frankly shocked. When I asked more, she mentioned that she already owned a two-storey house and a shop in the nearby village of Velanga, both for rent. I sat there speechless,” Onagar added.

The post quickly gained traction, with thousands of users interacting with it and hundreds commenting on the unexpected financial success for someone often assumed to be from a humble background.
While some praised the woman’s progress, others found it surprising: “Unbelievable. I think this is the magic of untaxed money,” one user wrote.
Another said: “Wage employees are taxed heavily, while domestic servants, street vendors and similar workers often pay zero taxes on their earnings. Over time, this allows them to save more and build assets faster than us.”
One user commented: “It’s as if the maid is richer than the owner – that’s how it looks.”
Another user responded, saying: “Why are you speechless? You should be happy that someone is making progress.”
A user also shared a similar story from Bengaluru: “Our cook at Blr owns a 30×40 plot of land nearby and is planning to build a 4-storey house on it (primarily to rent out 3 floors). Trying to convince the bank to lend to the construction (at some usurious rates we hear). Her eldest daughter plays for KA hockey team and her younger son is preparing for JEE in Narayana. Heartwarming to see the movement Real upside.”
