A Bengaluru creator’s honest take on house hunting has gone viral, sparking renewed interest in the city’s high housing costs and the stress that often accompanies moving. Rajeshwari Gupta took to Instagram to document her ongoing struggle to find an affordable apartment in HSR Layout, a popular but increasingly expensive neighborhood in the city.

Gupta explained in her video that she is in a race against time, and there are only 20 days left before she has to vacate her current residence. Hoping to get closer to her gym, she set a modest budget of INR 15,000 for a basic one-bedroom apartment.

However, her expectations soon collided with reality. She revealed that rents for a one-bedroom in HSR layout typically start from Rs 25,000 and can go up to Rs 50,000 for fully furnished units, numbers she described as out of her reach. She also highlighted the exorbitant security deposits, noting that they appeared more like an “investment” than a refundable amount.

Frustrated by her dealings with real estate brokers, Gupta decided to ditch the traditional route altogether. She recounted how agents’ guarantees of “reasonable” prices did little to keep in line with her budget, prompting her to conduct the research independently.

However, the process proved physically and emotionally draining. Gupta said she had been traveling extensively across the region on her scooter in the summer heat, and likened the experience to an unplanned marathon. Despite her simple requirements, adequate sunlight, proper ventilation and affordability, she said the search has turned into an exhausting routine with little success so far.

Describing her experience, she noted that house hunting in Bengaluru felt like a “full-time job with emotional damage”, wondering how others in the region were able to cope with such high costs. Her post resonated widely, with many social media users echoing similar concerns about the city’s rental market.

Gupta’s comment also underscored her urgency, as she sought help in finding a well-lit and ventilated one-bedroom within a flexible budget of INR 14,000-20,000. Her experience has since become part of a larger online conversation about affordability and quality of living in one of India’s fastest-growing urban centers.

The comments section reflects a mixture of sympathy, advice and skepticism.

“HSR rental prices are truly shocking.” “Deposits in Bengaluru should be illegal at this point,” one user wrote, while another added.

Others offered practical suggestions, with one saying, “Look near a metro line.. it will be well connected to far flung areas,” and another recommended, “Try Marathalli.. you can save a lot and use a very small portion of it on traveling to your gym.. or you can switch to another gym there..”

Not all responses were sympathetic. One user commented, “The way this clip is being presented, it looks like self-promotion to get more views and followers.”

Another questioned her preference for the location, writing: “Why only HSR, why not do it in other areas. Best thing is that going native is pretty much budget friendly.”

Many users also highlighted the broader impact of these challenges. “Looking for a home here drains your money and your sanity.” “Your scooter deserves a separate appreciation post after all those rides,” one comment read, while another added a lighter note.

One user summed up the popular coping strategy by saying: “This is exactly why so many people continue to live with roommates.”
