A horrific incident that took place at Sion Hospital in Mumbai has left many people distraught. A video clip showed a man standing calmly inside the hospital with a machete still stuck to his head. The injured man was also seen using his phone while waiting for treatment, something many netizens found hard to believe.

The incident involved 27-year-old Rohit Pawar, a resident of Mankhurd, who was attacked late at night during a fight near PMGP Colony, reported Mid-Day. Despite suffering a serious head injury, he remained conscious and was able to walk on his own when he arrived at the hospital.

The man was seen calmly using the phone

In the video shared online, Rohit can be seen standing calmly inside the hospital building while the weapon remains stuck in the left side of his skull. People around him appeared shocked, while others were seen recording videos on their phones.

What surprised many viewers most was Rohit’s calm demeanor despite his horrific injury. He was even seen checking his mobile phone while waiting for medical attention.

The clip quickly sparked strong reactions online. One user wrote: “The Dean of SAI Hospital should take notice of this matter and take immediate action against the doctors and staff concerned. If patients are suffering like this, what salary do these staff get??”

Another person commented, saying: “What is this? He’s still standing and operating the phone. Should he be in the operating room right? Even security is just standing and watching him.”

The caption read: “Oh my God! What do I see? This guy was casually walking by. People are staring at him and taking videos. These security guys seem to be the least annoying. Where are the doctors?”

Others pointed out that his ability to walk and use his phone does not mean that the injury is not serious. One user wrote: “If he is moving around using the phone, it does not mean that he is safe or there is no sign of concern on him. If care is not taken and standard procedures are not followed, he dies in a few minutes the moment the machete is removed from his skull.”

The attack happened after an old dispute

According to police, the attack took place around 10:30 pm near Irfan Chicken Shop in PMGP Colony, reported Midday. The officials said that the fight started due to an earlier quarrel between Rohit and another local youth named Gautam.

Three minors later confronted Rohit, police said. One of them allegedly attacked him with a machete, while the others punched and kicked him.

Rohit’s father, Nagnath Pawar, said the family was preparing for bed when Rohit left home to meet friends. “At around 10.15pm, when the family was about to go to bed, Rohit told me that he was going to hang out with his friends for a while,” he told Mid-Day. A few minutes later, the family was informed of the assault. Rohit was first taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi and later shifted to Sion Hospital.

Doctors explain how he survived

Doctors at Sion Hospital reportedly said that Rohit survived because the weapon entered a part of the brain that did not affect major functions.

Dr Batuk Deora, professor and head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Sion Hospital, explained that the machete passed through the skin, muscles, bones of the skull and parts covering the brain, but missed critical areas of the brain. “Since none of his major brain parts were affected, he was conscious. He spoke well and also had adequate motor skills,” the doctor told Mid-Day.

The doctors also explained that wiping and removing the weapon is very risky. The CT scan and angiogram reportedly took much longer than usual due to the position of the weapon.

According to doctors, Rohit will remain under observation as he may later face problems like seizures, weakness or speech-related issues. Meanwhile, the police arrested the three minors involved in the attack and sent them to the Dongri Children’s Home. Officials said CCTV footage from the area is also being examined as part of the investigation.
