‘Double standards at its peak’: Aishwarya Mohanraj’s old comedy clip faces backlash after Madhur Verli and Praneet More

The Indian comedy scene is currently witnessing a series of controversial reactions. Just as comedian Madhur Fairley issued a public apology after a two-year-old clip involving rape and murder surfaced, and amid ongoing chatter surrounding Praneet More’s recent Rs 370 biryani brawl, the spotlight has turned once again.

An old Comicstaan clip featuring Aishwarya Mohanraj has resurfaced on X (formerly Twitter), sparking a debate about selective outrage and the limits of comedy. In the clip that went viral, Mohanraj joked about giving birth to her brother, saying that her mother wanted to cut off his genitals and cried because she couldn’t. She then jokes that when she has a son in the future, she will fulfill her mother’s dream.

The clip has not aged well, with netizens calling on the public to laugh at a line centered around the mutilation of a male child.

The Internet criticizes “feminist double standards”

The clip sparked intense violent reactions, with many users pointing out that a comedian who makes similar statements about a child would face immediate legal and social consequences. “This is not comedy, this is outright hatred towards male children. When the genders are reversed, the entire internet will explode. Double standards are at their peak.”

Others highlighted the huge inconsistency in how the Internet regulates different types of jokes, comparing this clip to recent comedy clips:

“In India, female comedians can publicly make jokes about cutting off a child’s genitals, but male comedians are not allowed to make jokes about consensual sex.”

“What do you think. Will there be such an outrage over this Rs 370 comedy over such a disgusting comedy where a woman talks about cutting off her son’s penis after giving birth. You won’t see any outrage over this from feminists despite the fact that children are beyond the discourse of men and women.”

Has stand-up comedy become “too vulgar”?

Beyond specific gender rhetoric, the controversy has reignited a broader conversation about whether modern stand-up relies too heavily on shock value and graphic themes rather than genuine humour.

As one user wrote: “I don’t understand why they only address sexual topics in the name of jokes.” Another opined that “Anyone who finds humor in mutilating a child has a seriously distorted sense of empathy. The problem is not a joke – it’s the fact that you see a helpless child as an acceptable sentence. This is not progressive, edgy or feminist; it is simply cruel.”

With internet sleuths actively searching for old clips from popular comics, the current wave of accountability facing Indian artists shows no signs of slowing down.
