This house is built on the campus of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives in Ladakh (HIAL) and every little thing about it has been designed keeping the environment in mind. The biggest feature of this house is its walls. While most homes nowadays are made of cement, concrete and steel, this home uses clay and local natural materials. Similar houses have been built in Ladakh for centuries because the weather there is very harsh. Thick clay walls keep the house cool in the summer and retain heat inside for a long time in the winter. This reduces the need to run multiple separate heaters. The most interesting thing about this house is its passive solar design. The large windows of the house are designed in a direction where there is a lot of sunlight throughout the day.
