An Indian woman living in the US shared a reality check for people planning to move abroad, saying that life abroad is not as easy as many imagine. In a video, she spoke about the daily chores that come with living independently and urged newcomers not to expect the same amenities they would get at home.
One example I gave surprised a lot of people online. She claimed that buying drinking water every few days has become part of her routine, something she never expected before moving to the United States.
She shares her experience
The woman in the video said she spends about $3.50 (about 300 Indian rupees) every three days on large bottles of drinking water. She joked that carrying those heavy bottles would become one of the stories she would tell her children in the future.
“I thought I would become independent after coming to America,” she said. “But first I had to arrange for water and then chase my dreams.” She also spoke directly to people, especially women, who hope to settle abroad.
According to her, they should not expect the “princess treatment” they might receive at home, where parents often handle many of the daily chores. The woman explained that after long hours of work, even simple tasks such as buying and carrying water can make you feel tired. She also said that despite all her efforts, she still suffered from dry skin.

Social media is questioning her claims
While some people spoke about her experience adjusting to life abroad, many users disagreed with her comments about drinking water.
One user wrote: “No one does this in America, absolutely no one! This is complete bullshit.” Another commented: “They must be dumb as bricks or just creating viral content. RO purifiers are affordable and can be installed in homes. Most of the time they are not needed at all.”
“It’s just a cultural thing. You can get an RO filter for $150,” one person noted. Another person suggested a simpler solution, writing: “There are water filters you can buy and keep in your kitchen that will filter the water. One company is Dreo.”
One comment added: “There is under sink RO filter equipment ranging from $150-$1500, my friend installed one since their refrigerator doesn’t have a water dispenser, they installed a larger RO system in the garage because hard water makes him and his wife bald, cost $1200.”
Common challenges faced by immigrants in the United States include the high cost of living, the cost of everyday items such as reverse osmosis water purifiers, and the need to adapt to a lifestyle that is less comfortable than expected.
