A 42-kilometre line to connect key regions, reduce millions of road trips and expand the network by 2032

News18
Dubai is building a new metro line called the Gold Line, and it is expected to make a noticeable difference in how people move around the city.
The route will extend for approximately 42 kilometers, starting from Al Ghubaiba in Old Dubai, passing through areas such as Business Bay and Al Meydan, and ending with Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The main goal here is very clear and straightforward, which is to reduce pressure on both the existing roads and metro lines. Officials say the project could take more than 40 million trips off the roads each year.
It is also expected to ease congestion on parts of the Red Line, especially between Burjuman and Onpassiv, where congestion is already a problem.
Another key part of the plan is how it communicates with the rest of the system. The Gold Line will not operate separately, but will connect to Etihad Rail at two points, meaning it could make travel between Dubai and the other emirates much smoother.
The line is expected to cover more than 55 development areas and serve more than 1.5 million people by 2040. The daily passenger capacity could reach about 465,000 passengers once it is fully operational.
Construction will use tunneling methods aimed at minimizing disruption, especially in congested parts of the city where road digging is not an option.
Once the Gold Line is added, the Dubai Metro network will become much larger – ranging in length from approximately 120km to 162km, with more stations being added across the system.
The metro is already heavily used. Since its launch in 2009, it has carried more than 2.8 billion passengers, including nearly 295 million in 2025 alone.
This new line is mainly about keeping up with that demand and making sure the system doesn’t expand as the city continues to grow.
