An amazing case of neurology was described by doctors from Marseille, France, in 2007. A 44-year-old civil servant went to see doctors at a local hospital because of weakness in his left leg. In scientific publications about the case, the patient’s full name was not revealed to anyone, and everyone was told that he had a good job, was married, had two children, and seemed to lead a typical lifestyle.

During routine examinations, doctors perform a brain scan to obtain information about the cause of the patient’s condition. The results were shocking to everyone.

It turns out that almost all of the space inside the man’s skull was occupied by cerebrospinal fluid, while the mass of his brain was compressed to form a thin layer attached to the inner wall of the skull. The scientists concluded that 90 percent of the patient’s brain mass was absent.

However, the absence of a huge amount of gray matter did not affect the man’s cognitive abilities much; He did not suffer from severe memory problems, speech difficulties, or other disabilities. The IQ test gave the man a score of 75.

It was determined that it started from hydrocephalus, a disease caused by fluid buildup in the brain. He had suffered from the disease in childhood. In the early years of his life, doctors inserted a shunt into his body, which is used to lower brain pressure.

The shunt was removed during the patient’s teenage years. Over time, fluids began to accumulate again, but in a gradual manner. The brain has time to adapt through a process that occurs gradually.

This process enabled the surviving neurons to readapt. This is because the areas that control actions, speech, memory and functions were still working despite the brain pressure. It has become one of the most fascinating cases of the phenomenon of neuroplasticity. The man never realized anything strange about himself because he had no serious symptoms.

He was only diagnosed during his middle years when the condition worsened. Brain tests revealed that although his entire skull was filled with fluid, only the layer of tissue along its edges was functional. Scientists stated that this case was a challenge to traditional ideas about the required amount of brain tissue.

The individual lived independently after his diagnosis. The reason this case study is still in neuroscience years later is because it showed how plastic the brain can actually be. In addition, it has led scientists to think about how brain networks function when anatomy undergoes gradual change.
