A man is on trial in Hong Kong for murdering his girlfriend and later trying to transport her body. During court proceedings, the 29-year-old admitted his partner died because of his actions, but claimed it happened by accident while he was trying to help her lose weight.
According to reports, the accused offered to plead guilty to the less serious charge of manslaughter, but prosecutors rejected the proposal. He now faces a murder trial in the Supreme Court.
Prosecutors are challenging his interpretation
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), prosecutors alleged that Ng Ka Seng killed his girlfriend, 30-year-old Yip, in their 700-square-foot apartment in 2022. The prosecution argued that he did not reveal the full truth about what happened.
Prosecutor Audrey Barwani said in court: “The prosecution does not accept that the accused was telling the whole truth.”
Reports stated that Yip suffered burns that eroded 55% of her body. During the trial, Ng offered different explanations for her injuries, but prosecutors claimed he was concealing key facts.

He claimed he was helping her lose weight
Ng admitted that he caused his girlfriend’s death, but said it was not intentional. According to him, he repeatedly hit her with a stick to prevent her from sleeping while he was helping her lose weight.
He also claimed he wanted to stop at one point, but continued after his “sworn sister,” who lived with the couple, asked him to “keep going a little longer.”
Prosecutor Audrey Barwani told the court that Ng continued to beat Yip the next day as well. However, Ng reportedly told police that his girlfriend never asked him to stop.
He also claimed that Yip poured drain cleaner on the floor and asked him to spray some on her feet. According to his account, she later slipped and repeatedly hit herself against the wall. He also said that early on April 28, 2022, she complained of pain and said she might not survive before falling into a coma.
Passersby noticed something unusual
According to reports, Ng wrapped the body in a quilt and placed it on a wheel board. While he was transporting it on a street, a passerby noticed a leg sticking out of the cover and alerted the police.
The person who reported the incident, Lau Quoc Yan, later said that Ng was standing nearby but “did nothing”.
“He doesn’t seem to be in a panic,” Lau said.
Another witness, street worker Wong Ah-sum, said he asked Ng about the package and was told it was a “corpse” being taken to the police station. After his arrest, Ng reportedly told police: “That was my girlfriend. I accidentally beat her to death with a bar,” according to SCMP.
