One intern shared how opening up to a coworker impacted his chances of landing a full-time job. He spoke about his experience in a post on Reddit, explaining how things changed after he trusted someone he thought was a friend.

The employee said he had been working hard during his three-month internship at a technology company. His goal was to get a permanent role, and he thought he was on the right track.

Shares what went wrong at work

During his internship, a new intern joined the team and quickly became close to the HR department. At first, this doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Over time, the employee began sharing his concerns with this colleague. He talked about problems at work, including feeling like his team leader was taking credit for his work. “I made the mistake of venting to him one day. I thought he was a friend. I trusted him,” he wrote.

Soon after, he noticed a change in the way his team leader treated him. And when it came time for a potential full-time offer, things didn’t go as expected.

Instead of being hired, he was asked to continue as an intern for another three months. He said he was told: “You need a three-month extension. You cannot work independently. Your analytical thinking is very good but you still need an extension.”

Warning sign ignored

The decision surprised him, especially since one of the full-time employees had previously hinted that he had a strong chance of getting the job.

Looking back, he said there were signs he should have noticed earlier. He recalled a story the same trainee once shared about school.

“Looking back, there was one sign I completely ignored. The same apprentice once casually told me how at school he had thrown away an excellent revision book before exams. Just like that. No guilt, nothing. He told me that story as if it were a funny memory. People tell you exactly who they are. We don’t pay attention.”

He also said the delay affected his personal plans, as he had hoped to arrange medical care for his mother after he got a job.

People share their views online

After sharing the post, many people responded with their own opinions and advice. Some said they understood his situation and described it as a hard lesson. Others stressed the importance of maintaining distance at work.

One user wrote that they avoid talking about workplace issues with colleagues. Another said: “People don’t make friends in offices, it’s just social and formal interactions.”

One person commented, “Good thing you learned your lesson, even though it was the hard way. All the best for the future.” “Bro, no friends in offices + HR kisi ke saga nahi hote, they can’t give you a safe space. I learned that the hard way too,” another wrote.

One comment read: “Never, never, ever x infinity… Trust your colleagues in anything… I repeat anything. And I am sorry, I am sure you will find a good job soon. All the best!”

Another user said: “If I were you, I would destroy his career. You should learn to practice such politics and use people to your advantage.”
